Too Good to Go: Food on the brink of the bin waiting to be saved

In an attempt to combat food-wastage, big branded companies have been offering items of food that are close to their sell-by-date at a reduced price. Multinational companies such as Costa Coffee, Greggs, Krispy Kreme and Morrisons all use the service but once their items go live - it's difficult to grab a bag of your favourite items.

Taking advantage of this service, students have been praising and raving about the costs they're saving - not to mention that they're doing their own bit to tackle food-wastage.

The mobile app, which you can download from the app store, was founded in Denmark in 2015. The aim of the app and brand is to connect customers to restaurants and stores that have unsold produce that's about to go out-of-date. The app covers most European cities, including most towns and cities in the UK, and in October 2020, it started operating in North America.

How it works?

The process is nothing like anything else. On the app, it actually won't tell you what items you'll be picking up - that's it's called a 'Magic Bag' because it's a mystery until you open it to see what you get.

Once you find a business that's got a few magic bags remaining, you have to purchase a bag. Now's the time where you have to wait until collection time. It's important to be at the business on time.

This is in case you lose your slot or all the bags will have be taken before you get there.

When your collection window has started, a button on your in-app receipt will read 'swipe to redeem'. It's important when you arrive at the business to swipe this receipt that a member of staff sees you doing it.

Should student use this?

Fourth Year Business Management student Ame Robertson uses the service from time to time and keeps a keen eye out for sweet treats. "On occasion, depends on the time of day, I check the app to see if there's any avaliability nearby."

"In the past, I've gotten several Magic

Bag's from Morrisons and Costa but my favourite has to be from Krispy Kreme. They're doughnuts are so good but they sell out of them really quickly on the app so you have to be aware and be organised to be there within the time slot."

There was one time when Ame missed out on a Magic Bag from Morrisons. She said: "I had arrived before the collection time so I wandered around the store. When I went to pick up my Magic Bag, I was informed the last two had been collected. I then had to go onto the app and select the button therefore I could get my refund. I was not happy and actually quite dissapointed. This is the only time where I was unfortunate not to pick up a Magic Bag."

Too Good To Good is a rising brand and company and is obviously popular with everyone but it's business that students should be aware of as it could help them reduce costs.
